The Right AC Filter Schedule for Southeast Texas Pollen & Humidity

Every filter package carries a hopeful "change every 90 days" — written for a house in a temperate climate with a system that runs a few hours a day. That's not Southeast Texas. From March's oak tassels through the Big Thicket's spring pine pollen blizzard to grass season in the fall, Beaumont filters face a near-constant particulate load. Add Gulf humidity that turns filter dust into felt, plus systems that run 2,500+ hours a year, and the real replacement interval shrinks fast.

The Schedule That Works Here

• 1-inch pleated filters: every 30-45 days during cooling season, monthly during spring pollen — not the 90 days on the wrapper
• 4-5 inch media cabinets: every 6 months, checked at 4 — they hold more, but pollen season still tests them
• Homes with pets: cut any interval by a third; dog hair plus pine pollen is a filter's worst combination
• Stick to MERV 8-11: higher MERV ratings restrict airflow on systems not designed for them, especially older Beaumont air handlers
• Check monthly, always: hold the filter to a light — if you can't see through it, change it regardless of the calendar

Pine pollen season coats cars yellow — imagine what it does to a filter pulling 1,400 cubic feet of air per minute.
